Position summary
The engineering manager is responsible for the management of all activities performed within the engineering department including R&D, new product development, product sustainment, and manufacturing support. The engineering department consists of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering teams as well as project management. The primary role of the engineering manager is to lead these teams to success. The engineering manager will be expected to represent Med and the engineering team externally with customers, suppliers, and partnered businesses. This is a broad position that requires a high level of technical proficiency, leadership and management skills, detailed organization, an aptitude to handle multiple and changing priorities with professionalism and poise, and strategic planning to minimize the challenges associated with those changing priorities. The engineering manager also has an important role in supporting and developing Med Associates’ workplace culture. This position plays a pivotal role in the selection and planning of new products through offering insight on team resources, customer requests, and perspective on project feasibility to upper management for decision making. This position helps determine the future of MED Associates products which contributes heavily to the year over year success of our Business as a whole.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Offer engineering perspective and departmental knowledge as part of leadership team participation and assistance for executive decision-making.
- Provide leadership to the engineering team for development and sustainment of Med Associates product line.
- Set engineering team priorities and deadlines and facilitate achievement of those via management of the company’s engineering divisions, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Project Management, and the associated team members.
- Work with sales leadership and company owners to guide product development strategy towards a product line that best serves customer needs while improving manufacturing efficiency and minimizing the effects of supply chain disruptions.
- Lead the development of detailed product requirements for new projects by coordinating with the engineering team, sales team, and other stakeholders.
- Facilitate the engineering team in developing the required system architecture, detailed technical design, project plan and product testing plan to achieve the product requirements.
- Guide the engineering team to incorporate feedback from customers, sales, support, and manufacturing to improve and refine existing products.
- Promote a positive workplace culture and facilitate a collaborative relationship between departments as manager of the engineering team.
- Responsible for staffing and resource planning to allow the engineering team to achieve its goals via development and training of existing team members, planning future staffing needs, and sourcing and developing relationships with external consultants where needed.
- Responsible for the training and development of engineering team members to provide for company needs and improve morale through growth.
- Represent the company to customers through participation in conferences, customer collaborations and partnerships, and other interactions as required.
- Coordinates with company ownership and Human Resources for HR related activities such as recruiting, employee concerns, safety concerns, conflict resolution, and performance appraisals.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in mechanical engineering, technical, or science-related discipline.
- At least 10 years’ related experience, including 2 years’ experience as a manager or facilitator of interdisciplinary teams.
- Strong systems orientation with a focus on optimizing performance through the utilization of tools as well as the development of outstanding team members.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization as well as customers and vendors.
- Knowledge of current state-of-the-art in computer programming languages, 2-D and 3-D mechanical design tools, electronic circuit design tools, and CAD/CAM software/hardware.
- Ability to take criticism and handle stressful situations professionally and tactfully.
- Familiarity in the areas of neuroscience, behavioral psychology physiology, pharmacology, or experimental psychology a plus.
- An expertise in using databases and spreadsheets for organizational purposes.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
This is an indoor office-based job requiring the use of a computer. It involves walking about the department performing managerial engineering duties as well as firsthand involvement in processes. The job requires a certain amount of deskwork. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in air-conditioned facility. The employee will be required to wear safety glasses, and other personal protective equipment as needed.
